Blog: What to Say When You Have Nothing to Say on a Survey

We’ve all been there. You’re invited to a new survey, you’re excited to share your opinions and earn points, but then you read a question and your mind goes blank. You can’t think of anything to say! It’s normal to sometimes not be able to think of a good response to certain questions, or to not have an opinion on a topic that doesn’t apply to you. Let’s talk about what you should do in this situation.

1. Be honest.

If you receive a survey that’s not relevant to you, it may be tempting to tell a little white lie to continue through the survey and earn the points. Instead of telling us what you think we want to hear, please be honest instead. If you are misleading in your responses, it could trigger a chain reaction of surveys that do not apply to you. There’s also the risk that our quality control system will detect data inconsistencies and your account will be flagged, which could eventually lead to removal from the community. It’s better to be honest and tell us that a question doesn’t apply to you, or simply leave the survey incomplete and wait for the next one.

2. Tell it like it is.

That brings us to our next point: when you have nothing to say, tell us that! We sometimes see responses to open-ended questions that are what we call “keyboard-smashing”, a.k.a. typing gibberish or random letters into the text box (another thing our quality control system detects). If you’re ever really stuck on an open-ended question, or the topic doesn’t apply to you, it’s okay to simply tell us you can’t think of anything to say. This is not considered a low-quality survey response. We appreciate the honesty and effort!

We hope this advice will help you the next time you feel like you have nothing to say on a survey. If you have any other questions about survey-taking, let us know and we’ll be happy to help!
